NewsPhil Spector trial: Day 50Judge Larry Paul Fidler reprimanded the defence team in the Phil Spector murder trial today (August 16) for violating evidence rules. Fidler said that the defence ignored proper protocol when presenting criminalist Michael Baden's surprise testimony that actress Lana Clarkson did not die immediately after being shot, because it did not give the prosecution a chance for rebuttal. "I have no doubt, let me say that as clearly as I can, that this was done to gain tactical advantage," Fidler said. Defence attorney Bradley Brunon insisted that he knew nothing of the new evidence prior to Baden's testimony, reports the Los Angeles Times. When Brunon added that the judge should avoid penalising Spector for sins committed by his lawyers, Fidler got upset. "That is really offensive," Fidler said. "You better withdraw that comment." Fidler decided to let the testimony stand, but instructed jurors to take the defence's actions into consideration when deciding whether Baden is a credible witness. Spector is accused of murdering Clarkson at his Los Angeles mansion on February 3, 2003. The defence contends the actress' death was suicide. Rihanna achieves UK chart landmark Rihanna has scored the longest-running Number One single in a decade after claiming a tenth week at the top of the chart with 'Umbrella'. As was widely predicted, 'Umbrella' becomes the first song since Wet Wet Wet's 'Love Is All Around' in 1994 to spend more than nine weeks at the top. Wet Wet Wet were at the top for 15 weeks, while '(Everything I Do) I Do It For You' by Bryan Adams, stayed at the top for 16 weeks in 1991. Whitney Houston's 'I Will Always Love You' was at Number One for 10 weeks one year later. The record stay at the top is still 18 weeks, set by Frankie Laine's 'I Believe' back in 1953. Winner of reality show 'Britain's Got Talent' Paul Potts entered the album chart at Number One with his debut 'One Chance'. The former mobile phone salesman, who was signed by Simon Cowell after winning the ITV1 show, knocked this week's NME cover stars The Enemy from the summit. |
